Cupcake Drawings

Before the summer after we finished our AS project we had a few workshops in drawing and painting. I chose to use cupcakes as my subject as there are a few different textures on each cake. This allowed me to experiment more. Below are each of the cupcakes with a description of the proccess beside it.

I created this cupcake using the continuous line Drawing technique. I used fine liner to draw it so the tone of the line stayed the same the whole time. To create dark tones you bunch the line up closer   together and for the Light areas you allow for large spacing or no line at all. This continuous line drawing is more textural  than the other pen sketches as it uses different techniques for the cake, icing and case.

This cupcake is the only colour cupcake I created. I feel it went well however I wasn’t the most confident with acrylics. The main focal point of the cupcake was the icing as it is the largest part of the

cupcake and has the most variant in colour. The colours I used were quite vibrant and made it stand out. I used quite warm colours for the majority of the cake apart from the balls which I used cold colours to contrast the warm icing. I used thicker paint as I didn’t like the effect watering down the acrylic

gave. This gave the cupcake a heavier feel however I feel it looked good as a final result.

This illustration uses pencil to create a tonal effect. This image feels a lot softer and smoother than the pen images as pencils  are softer and not black. This makes the image feel more realistic. The realistic effect is created using highlights and dark tones to create depth in the image. This also creates a 3D feel for the image. I feel it could have been improved by using a softer pencil allowing me to create darker and lighter tones. The image is very monochromatic, this makes you focus on the whole image as you are  focused on 1 colour.

The cupcake on this page was created using wax and ink to create a wax resist. We used crayons  to create  the dark tones and highlights  of the cupcake. Once we had this we used a wash of ink over the top to create the mid tones. The wax resist effect I feel could have been changed to make the appearance more 3D by changing how many dark tones and highlights I used. This image is very monochromatic

The next image was created using biro. This sketch was a lot more spontaneous and felt a lot more rough when drawing it. However the end result was overall pleasing.  Again the image was very monochromatic meaning you focus on  the whole image. I feel it could have been  improved by having  darker tones as it  would make the image  have more depth. The  dark tones area created by using more  biro in a smaller area  and highlights are  created by less biro.

This image was created using a fine liner to create an outline of the cupcake. It is a lot simpler than the others and I feel it could be used to add colour to, to create a cartoon cupcake to be used in a logo or on packaging. The image is very flat and does not have dark tones or highlights. However still has a lot of detail in the shape of  the cupcake and the               outline of the different components.

The cupcake here was again created using the         continuous line style giving the image structure. This continuous line drawing is less textural than the other and focuses more on highlights and dark tones to     give a sense of depth and lighting to the image. The   image is very monochromatic design of the cupcake as opposed to a certain colour or area. It was made

using a fine liner allowing for very fine lines and a lot of precision to create non solid dark areas to keep the continuous line look. which makes you look at the opposed to a certain colour or area.
